RUMFORD — Students from Mary Kaubris’ French classes at Dirigio High School and Marie Russell’s at Mountain Valley High School traveled to Quebec City, Canada. The students and chaperones took a six-hour bus ride, got a walking tour of the city, then went to a Cabane à Sucre Québécoise (sugar shack) for a 17th century meal, dancing and taffy pull.

The next day, the students toured Old Quebec and learned more by doing a fact-finding mission or scavenger hunt. They observed mosaics and a replica of Michelangelo’s Pieta at the Ste. Anne de Beaupré Basilica. After dinner in Old Quebec, they boarded a boat to cruise the St. Lawrence River and danced.

The group also toured the exhibits at the Musée de la Civilisation before loading up for the bus ride home.

In addition to seeing the sites, many students said they learned about the French language and Quebecois culture.

MVHS junior Josh Maillet said, “I learned some new Québécois slang and a lot about Québécois history.”

The students also offered advice to students who may consider a similar trip.

“Have fun, with or without your friends. It’s a great experience. I loved it and had a great time,” said MVHS sophomore Jordan Duguay.

The students weren’t the only ones having a great time. The chaperones also enjoyed the sights and the experiences.

“It was nice to see the students blend, MVHS and Dirigo, enjoying this culture – dancing, eating, laughing and learning together, ” said Susan Adley.

By all measures of success, Mmes Kaubris and Russell created a wonderful set of experiences for their students and the chaperones.
