1944 – 2015

CHINA — Sheldon L. Bumps, 70, died unexpectedly Thursday, June 11, at his home.

He was born Dec. 2, 1944, in China, to the late Donald H. and Julia (Cunningham) Bumps. Sheldon was a lifelong resident of China, graduate of Erskine Academy, veteran of the United States Air Force and decades-long member of the China Village Volunteer Fire Department.

In 2010, he retired from Duratherm Window Corp. in Vassalboro after 40 years of service.

Sheldon was, above all, an incredible husband, father and grandfather. His family was his greatest treasure. He was happiest when surrounded by his immediate and large extended family. Sheldon was also a loyal and generous friend to many, always the first to lend a hand or offer support. He cared deeply about his community, believed strongly in being an engaged and informed citizen and led by example in everything he did.

Throughout his life, Sheldon was an avid supporter and fan of local athletics. Whether umpiring, playing, coaching or watching from the sidelines, he rarely missed a chance to be where the action was, including always being available for a round of golf with his friends. With his own children, he supported every activity and interest with uncompromising strength and pride. Family camping and fishing trips were too many to count, and in his retirement, he had passed on a love of fishing to his grandchildren.

Sheldon was a skilled woodworker and filled his own home and the homes of his family with his custom furniture and one-of-a-kind pieces. He carried on a tradition of hard work and pride in everything he did from his parents. Whether it was the landscaping of his yard, plowing snow or helping a family member with a project, you always knew that Sheldon would do it well. He was well-known for dropping in on friends, family and local places of business for the latest news and neighborly visits.

Sheldon is survived by his wife of 44 years, Dianne (Hall) Bumps of China; his son, Randy Bumps and wife, Mariah, of Tolland, Conn.; his daughter, Heather Bumps and wife, Christine Cuevas, of Timonium, Md.; his brother, Dwane Bumps and wife, Bobbi, of Hebron; three grandchildren, Chase Cuevas-Bumps, and Garrett and Kathryn Bumps; his cousins and close friends, Dianne (Bumps) Higgins, Bonnie (Bumps) Studley and George Studley; two aunts, Rachel (Bumps) Cunningham and Hattie (McCaslin) Bumps; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Edward and Susan Karass, and George and MaryAnn Hall; several nieces and nephews, many cousins; and his beloved dog and constant companion, Brody.

He was predeceased by many aunts, uncles and several cousins.
