Dottie Perham-Whittier, Lewiston’s community relations coordinator, said the work is supposed to begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday and continue until 7 a.m. Thursday between Maple and Cedar streets. Lisbon Street traffic will be detoured up Maple to Park streets while the work is underway. Trucks will be detoured down Cedar Street.

All lanes of Lisbon Street will remain open until the work begins, she said.

“It is an actual sewer line break that they just discovered,” Perham-Whittier said. “It’s something that needs to be attended to right away, but it’s not an imminent danger. It’s not like the sky is falling.”

Public Works Director David Jones said city crews noticed a slight dip in the Lisbon Street/Cedar Street intersection on Tuesday. The investigated, and found a leak in the sewer main.

“We have barrel over it now,” he said. “We’ll open it up, get it repaired and have the paving guys out so it’s back open by 7 a.m. It’s just like other projects we’ve done over night along this road over the past few weeks.”
