Side by side the flag of the United States and the old tri-color of France snapped and whipped in the cool breezes of Wednesday. The business section of the city was ablaze with bright red, toned by blue and contrasted by white, Wednesday, as Franco-American Lewiston prepared right royally to observe the glorious feast of St. John on Thursday. The three parishes, St. Peter and St. Mary, and St. Louis, with the many societies that assume such a large share in the life of these people, will unite in a martial parade.
50 years ago, 1965
The executive director at the Great Falls Urban Renewal Project in Auburn today indicated that the city’s second UR project, should it be undertaken, would most probably be located in the area adjoining that covered by the current program. Ronald C. Desjardins, addressing Auburn-Lewiston Kiwanians at the group’s weekly luncheon meeting at the YMCA, said it was the area which would be bounded by an extended Turner Street, which would cross Court Street and meet Main Street. Desjardins speculated that the street could be widened to 100 feet, and the area would provide an excellent location for a proposed federal building, which, because of certain requirements, will not be located in the Great Falls project area.

If and when Joey Gamache Jr. finally steps into the ring against Brian Mitchell to challenge for the World Boxing Association junior lightweight championship, there’ll be a new face in his corner. Gamache has retained the services of acclaimed trainer Jimmy Williams to prepare him for his long-awaited title shot, for which he expects to sign a deal early next week. Williams, who is also the trainer for former world champions John “The Beast” Mugabi and Lloyd Honeyghan, has been working with Gamache this week in Tampa, Fla.
