AUBURN — The Auburn Public Library has announced its July programming for teens.
Teen Anime Club — Wednesday, July 1, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Androscoggin Community Room: Get animated over anime! Teens, ages 12-18, can drop in to talk about their favorite (or least favorite) manga, watch this week’s selection of anime, and try their hands at drawing characters. This program was made possible by a generous gift of the P&G Fund of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation. Snacks will be provided.
Summer movie series: Teens, ages 13 to 18, may view the movie series hosted by Molly from the Sexual Assault Prevention & Response Services (SAPRS). This summer’s series will feature four movies dealing with various teen issues, including healthy relationships, peer pressure, safety and breaking stereotypes. Insightful conversation will follow each movie. Refreshments will be included. Movie showings will include “The Other Sister,” on Thursday, July 2, from 2 to 4:30 p.m.; “Stand By Me,” on Thursday, July 16, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.; and “The Lovely Bones,” on Thursday, July 30, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. All movies are shown in the Androscoggin Community Room.
Teens! Q+A with Outright L/A — Mondays, July 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 3 to 5:00 p.m. in the Androscoggin Community Room: The library partnered with Outright L/A to offer Queers + Allies (Q+A), a youth-driven, educational program where LGBTQQAI, identifying students and straight allies can work together to create a positive, fun space. Q+A will create the opportunity for an open and relaxed atmosphere where teens can share in self-expression, exploration, support and advocacy for political and social change. The event will include games, art projects, guest speakers and field trips. This program is part of the “Unmask!” Summer Reading Program, exploring the hero in you, is open to youth ages 13 to 18, including recently graduated seniors.
Gaming Hour — Wednesday and Friday, July 8 and 24, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Androscoggin Community Room: Teens ages 12 to 18 can enjoy video games and snacks. The library has an XBox and Wii and games rated teen and younger.
Teens Unmask! Heroes in the Movies — Thursdays, July 9, 23 and Aug. 6, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Androscoggin Community Room: Movies will feature superheroes. “The Dark Knight” will show July 9; “Spiderman 2” on July 23; and real-life hero Louis Zamperini in “Unbroken” on Aug. 6. This program will also include a light snack and is for teens, ages 12 to 18.
Teens Unmask! Comic Book Workshop with Mike Jordan — Tuesdays, July 14 and 21, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Teen Space: Local artist Mike Jordan will lead a two-session comic book workshop for teens between the ages of 12 and 18 who enjoy drawing and writing. Participants will write and illustrate their own group comic book. This program requires pre-registration and participants must be available for both sessions. DIY Teens! Takeover Superhero Masks — Wednesday, July 15, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Teen Space: This month, keeping with the summer reading theme, teens ages 12 to 18 will create superhero masks.
Maine Job Corps — Wednesday, July 22, from 10 to 11:00 a.m. in the conference room: Jill Moody of the Maine Job Corps visits to explain how the program works and who is eligible.
DIY Teens! Media Club — Wednesday, July 22, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the CREATE! Media Lab: Teens, ages 12 to 18, can join the Media Club and make trailers, podcasts, and more that could be posted on our website. Teens can also make movies, music, graphic art, and whatever they can imagine.
Teens! Heroes Unmasked Jeopardy — Wednesday, July 29, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Androscoggin Community Room: Teens ages 12 to 18 will play a special edition of Jeopardy entitled “Heroes Unmasked.” They may play as individuals or form teams. Some categories are Movies, Animal Heroes and Video Game Heroes. There will be snacks for all and prizes for the winner(s)! This program is just for teens, ages 12-18.
“Until Tuesday”: Luis & Tuesday’s Story — Monday, Aug. 3, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Androscoggin Community Room: Author and Iraq War veteran Luis Carlos Montalvan and his service dog, Tuesday, will visit the library to share their story. This event is open to all ages and will include a demonstration of how Tuesday assists Capt. Montalvan in his daily life. There will be a question and answer session, copies of his two books for sale, “Until Tuesday” and “Tuesday Tucks Me In,” a book signing. Tickets, which are free, are required to attend.
