PARIS — Police said a Mexico man is charged with beating a woman with a broom and forcing her to have sex with him.

David Clark, 53, of Roxbury Road made an initial appearance Friday afternoon in Oxford County Superior Court via video on felony counts of gross sexual assault and domestic violence assault. He was not required to enter a plea.

According to an affidavit by Mexico Police Chief Roy Hodsdon, Clark had a verbal argument that escalated to physical violence and sexual assault Sunday. Clark struck the woman multiple times in the chest, arms and shoulders with a metal broom, which left bruises as large as tennis balls.

After the assault, Clark dragged the woman by her hair into a bedroom where he sexually assaulted her, Hodsdon said the woman told police.

Hodsdon said Clark characterized the sex as consensual, admitted to hitting the woman over the head with a two-foot-long dog bone, but denied striking her on the arms and chest.

Clark was arrested Thursday and booked at the Oxford County Jail in Paris. He was released from jail on $10,000 cash or $100,000 worth of real estate.

The charges carry a maximum prison sentence of 40 years and a fine of up to $55,000. He is expected to make a court appearance in September.
