1916 – 2015

SOUTH PARIS — Evelyn A. Harper, 99, died Saturday, June 27, at her home.

She was born in Farmingdale on May 26, 1916, a daughter of Horace A. and Bessie E. Jones Small. She graduated from Gardiner High School, Maine General Hospital Nursing School and in Boston she graduated as an RN nurse anesthetist.

She was a 1st Lt. in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps at the 67th Army General Hospital, where she met Dr. Harry Harper due to sharing the same birthday and profession, and spent 34 months in England. She married him on Oct. 17, 1945. Evelyn was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, and spent many years as a member of the Stephens Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She volunteered for many other organizations as well. An avid golfer, she was a life member and club champion at Norway Country Club.

Survivors include her husband of South Paris; son, John A. of Wiscasset; daughter, Jane E. Frechette and her husband, Richard, of Norway; grandchildren, Mellissa and Matthew Harper, Carri Frechette, Kayla Hoke and her husband, Jared, Laura Harper, Joanna Fadden and her husband, Georgie; great-grandchildren, Danielle Harper, Harper Logan McConnell and Alaric Hoke; a sister, Connie Wing of Gardiner; and many nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was predeceased by a son, Joseph, who died March 13, 1996; and siblings, Harold Small, Ann Jenkins, Ruth Sharp and Betty Small.

The family would like to thank Charlotte Varney of Oxford for all of her care and devotion that made it possible for Evelyn to stay in her own home.
