BRUNSWICK — Brunswick and Topsham firefighters rescued three local kayakers from an island in the Androscoggin River on Monday afternoon after their kayaks overturned.

The kayakers from Brunswick and Lisbon were in a single kayak and a tandem kayak downstream from the hydroelectric dam at Fort Andross owned by Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners, Brunswick Fire Chief Ken Brillant said Wednesday.

“The dam was open, and a lot of water was running pretty good,” he said.

The kayakers, who were wearing life jackets, rounded a corner in the Androscoggin where the river narrows and the current “picks up really, really hard, and they ended up swamping their kayak.”

Once on the island, one of the kayakers called for help from her cellphone. Brunswick and Topsham fire boats retrieved them and brought them to the boat ramp on Water Street in Brunswick.

None of the three were injured, Brillant said.
