NORWAY — Frost Farm Gallery will hold a First Friday reception, meet and greet the artist from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 3. The show, titled “Shape, Shade and Texture,” will feature black and white photographs by Rex Holsapple.

Like many photographers, Holsapple worked for his high school newspaper and yearbook. In college, he developed an interest in outdoor activities, and it changed his photographic interest from journalism to landscapes.

“Photography continued to be a hobby for more decades than I care to reveal,” said Holsapple. “About six years ago, I became dissatisfied with the technical and aesthetic quality of my photography. Soon I realized that I would never be more than mediocre if I only worked at it one afternoon a week. So I quit my job, and now I work full time on my art. In fact, I spend more time now making photographs than I did on my so-called ‘real job.’ But I do believe I now interpret and print my old negatives better than before. I also believe I am better at recognizing and revealing beauty in the images that form our visual perception of the world.”

Holsapple has been a student, a manager of foreign exchange risk, a chief investment officer and a consultant. He has lived in Texas, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Nebraska and England. “Now an artist living in Mt. Vernon, Maine, I make film-based, black and white photographs using a large format camera made of wood. I develop the negatives and make prints in a darkroom in my basement – the traditional place for a traditional darkroom. I hope you like the way I see the world.”

Gallery goers will also hear live jazz keyboard by Mike Maurice at the opening reception. The show is free and open to the public, and the exhibit and sale will continue at Frost Farm Gallery, located in the historic David W. Frost farm, 272 Pikes Hill, through Saturday, Aug. 1.
