WILTON — As waves lap the rock wall at the foot of Wilson Lake, the repeated motion takes its toll.

The issue is to find someone qualified to provide maintenance on the rock wall, Town Manager Rhonda Irish, recently said. The one who used to do it is no longer available leaving her searching for someone else.

The town repairs the few small sink holes in the cement and will repair a collapsed culvert next to the lake, she said pointing to an indented area where cars park.

But the rock area requires someone who can do that type of stone wall repair, she said.

Irish does not foresee any work being done on the wall this season while she looks for that person.

An overhaul of the wall could cost over $100,000 but we’re keeping what we have while looking at other options first, she said.

The town will try to find grants for this project but in the meantime, it is up to town to provide maintenance to keep it safe and secure, she said.

Representatives from the Department of Environmental Protection were invited to take a look at the wall with town officials as a proactive move, she said.

One area they discussed was replacement of the shrubs, overgrown rosa rugosa bushes between the lake and road, with a native species, she said.

“Rosa Rugusa bushes are on DEP’s invasive plant web page on a list of ‘plant species potentially or probably invasive in Maine,'” she said.

The bushes may be cut back this season but replacement is on hold while a plan is developed to include native plants, she said.

Across the water at the boat landing, a new dock has been installed, she said.

Funds were awarded from a boat dock replacement grant through the Department of Conservation.

The funds were applied for last fall. The dock was built over the winter and installed recently, she said.
