“Pushaw to Penobscot – A Paddle through Time” – a canoe trip with cultural and ecological focus, will be held on Saturday July 18 from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. The rain date will be Sunday, July 19.
Join Bucky Owen and John Bear Mitchell to form a flotilla of six 28-foot canoes for a 10-mile journey from Hirundo Wildlife Refuge to Indian Island in Old Town. During the four to five stops along the way, the canoes will raft together for talks about archaeology, past climates, Penobscot use of the area, Hirundo’s 50th anniversary, Penobscot River Restoration, fish migration, and more. Bring a picnic lunch; drinks will be provided.
Meet at Indian Island for carpooling; there will be a parking area opposite 31 Wabanaki Way. Advance registration is required by July 16, call 394-2171 or write to [email protected]. The cost is $10 a member, $15 for non-members.
The program is sponsored and supported by Varney Agency Insurance& Bonding, Old Town, F.L. Putnam Investment Management Company, the Penobscot Riverkeepers and the Penobscot Nation.
