Darrold Kenneth Clair

1927-2015

Darrold Kenneth Clair passed away July 3, 2015 at Maine General Hospital in Augusta.

He was born Aug. 2, 1927 in Waterville, ME to Noah and Maude (Rancourt) Clair. He served in the United States Navy and then worked at the Maine Central Railroad until his retirement. In his spare time he was an avid stamp collector and served as president of the Franklin County Stamp and Coin Club.

He married Kitty Hudson in 1950 and they raised six boys together, Gary, Jeffrey, Ross, Randall, Todd and Jason. Darrold remarried in 1990 to Muriel Buck.

Darrold was predeceased by his son Randall Clair, two brothers, Gary (Guy) and Maynard Clair, and his wife Muriel.

Edwin Richard Lowell

1939-2015

Edwin Richard Lowell, 76, a lifetime resident of Rangeley, died early Friday, July 10, 2015 at the Hospice House in Auburn with his loving family by his side.

Edwin was born June 29, 1939, a son of Richard and Ethelin (Barrett) Lowell. He attended school in Rangeley and married Susan Simpson on July 13, 1963. He began his career working in the woods and operating heavy equipment for D.C. Morton & Sons INC., later working for Paul Bolduc and started with M&H construction in 1986 where he worked for 28 years.

Ed was an extremely hard working man who took pride in his productivity and performance. In 2007, he was inducted into the Logger’s Hall of Fame in the Maine Forestry Museum for his dedication and work in the woods of Maine. In Ed’s spare time, he enjoyed sawing wood in his backyard, typically 12-15 cords of wood! He was a true Maine man, and homebody who enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by his devoted and caring wife of 51 years, Susan Lowell of Rangeley; sons, James Lowell and his wife, Christine of Nashua, NH, and Steven Lowell and his wife, Shelly of Rangeley; his father, Richard Lowell of Rangeley; siblings, Michael Lowell and his wife, Rachel of Rangeley, Linda Thibodeau and her husband, Pierre of Rangeley, Frank Lowell and his wife, Linda of Coplin Plantation, and Leeanna Wilbur and her husband Robert of Rangeley; grandchildren, Christian, Hunter, Nathan, Luke, Maren and Meagan; and several nieces and nephews.

LOWELL — died, at Auburn, Edwin R. Lowell, 76, of Rangeley. A public memorial graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at Evergreen Cemetery in Rangeley with Rev. Roland Lewis Marshall

1933-2015

Roland Lewis Marshall, 81, the oldest lifelong resident of Granite Street, Mexico, passed peacefully, with family at his side, in the early morning hours of Saturday July 11, 2015 at CMMC, Lewiston.

He was born on Granite St. Mexico, Oct. 10, 1933, the son of Michael and Lena (Strout) Marshall. He received his education in local schools and on August 23, 1953, in Mexico, married his best friend, Mary Ann Ouellette of Jay. He operated Marshalls Service Center at the top of Falls Hill, Rumford from Jan. of 1970 until Sept. of 1995. He also co-owned Rolann’s Ice Cream Shoppe with his wife, adjacent to the Service Center, from 1985-2001.

Roland was a member of the Eagles in Rumford, and was a quiet family-centered gentleman who enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and their families.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ann of Mexico; their children: Michael Marshall and his wife, Suzanne of Bryant Pond; Robin Marshall and his wife, Lisa of Dixfield; Kim Marshall and his wife, Susan of Mexico; Lee Marshall and his wife, Lynne of Fairfield; Sheila Mills and her husband, Chris of S. Portland; Lynn Moroney and her husband, Michael of Suffield, Connecticut; and Jamie Marshall and his wife, Karen of Rome, Georgia; 24 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; a special niece, Mary McDermott and her husband, William of Framingham, Mass.; a special nephew, J. Gary Thibodeau of Bradenton, Florida; a special cousin, Carroll Strout of Palm Harbor, Florida.

James R. Costello

1934-2015

James R. Costello Sr., 81, of Scarborough, died on Thursday, July 9, at home surrounded by family following a courageous eight-month battle with cancer.

Born on June 14, 1934, in Lewiston, son of Russell Hill and Jane Cassidy Costello, he graduated from Lewiston High School and the University of Maine. He served in the U.S. Army European Theater of Operations 1956-1957.

He was married to Janice Callahan on July 12, 1958. Together they had five children and eight grandchildren. You were likely to find James on a golf course in Naples, Fla., or summering at Pine Point. James was a talented athlete and a fierce competitor. Among many of his sports accomplishments, he shot his age while golfing at age 78 and made three holes-in-one, two occurring two weeks apart in 2013. He also won the Wyndemere Senior Club Championship in 2007. James looked forward to family vacations and his fishing trips with friends. He shared his enjoyment of sailing, golf, skiing at Mt. Abram and Sugarloaf, tennis and woodworking with his family.

James joined the Sun Journal in 1952, working part time in the press room and composing room. He was named production manager in 1960. He was named general manager in 1979, publisher and treasurer in 1983, and president and publisher in 1993, a position he held until his death.

James demonstrated his commitment to the newspaper industry and his community through his involvement. James has been past president of the Maine Daily Newspapers Publishers Association and the New England Newspaper Association, past member of the Advisory Board of the American Mutual Insurance Company, member of the board of directors of Northeast Bank, campaign chairman and past president of the Lewiston-Auburn United Way Fund, past member of the Governor Curtis State Mental Health Program, past president and governing board member of the St. Marguerite d’Youville Pavilion, past president and member of the board of directors of Tri-County Mental Health Planning Board, past president and Governing board member of the St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, past director of Northern Utilities Inc., past director of the Maine Criminal Justice Planning and Assistance Agency, past chairman of the Lewiston Police Commission, past treasurer of the Festival by the Lake, past member of the Advisory Board for Fleet Bank, member of the board of directors of Falmouth Country Club, and a lifelong, active member of St. Joseph’s Parish.

James is survived by his loving wife, Janice, of 57 years; his five children, Catherine Snook and her husband, Edward, of Auburn, James Jr. and his wife, Debra, of Lewiston, Stephen and his wife, Mary Ellen, of Lewiston, David and his wife, Carie, of Falmouth, and Maureen Wedge and her husband, David, of Westbrook; eight grandchildren, Edward (Ted) Jr., Meghan and Anna Snook, Kevin, Stephanie and Courtney Costello, and Caitlin and David Costello; one sister, Jane Wellehan of Portland.

He was predeceased by his parents; and his sister, Alice Dillingham.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation for the care and compassion James received from Central Maine Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center and Hospice of Southern Maine. Special thanks to Dr. William Lee for his extraordinary care of James. The Costello family is very grateful for his kindness, concern and support.

COSTELLO — James R. Sr., 81, of Scarborough, died on Thursday, July 9. Visitation was held on Monday, July 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at The Fortin Group Funeral Home, 217 Turner St., Auburn. Services will be held on Tuesday, July 14, at 11 a.m., at Saints Peter and Paul Basilica, 122 Ash St., in Lewiston. Interment at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Lewiston.
