FARMINGTON — In a pitching duel, Brandon Varney threw a complete game as Rogers Post 153 squeaked out a 2-1 victory over Franklin County in nine innings, Monday evening at Hippach Field.
It was the third straight loss, by one run, for the Flyers, who have dipped to 10-4.
Varney fanned 12 Franklin batters, allowing six hits, walking one and hitting two.
His counterpart, Amos Herrin, went into the ninth inning, striking out nine batters and walking three before Jake Davenport came in relief with one out in the ninth.
Nick Lawrence drove home Drew Lashua with a double in the top of the ninth for the game-winning run. It was one of three doubles on the day for Rogers Post (8-5), with Lashua and Lew Jensen notching the other two.
Jensen opened up the scoring as he came home on an error in the second inning.
Sebastian Lombardi scored Franklin County’s lone run in the bottom of the fifth on a Ryan Pratt single. Pratt had two singles for the Flyers.
Franklin County will finish off regular season play with a double header, Saturday at Hippach Field when the Flyers host Jackson Silver Post of Locke Mills. The first game is set for 5 p.m.
Zone 2 playoffs will begin Tuesday, featuring the top eight teams in the league with the top four hosting. Nine inning games are slated with the winners advancing to the Zone championship series.
