RANGELEY — Two transients accused of stealing a vehicle in Texas and driving cross-country with suspended licenses were arrested outside a Main Street motel  early Thursday.

Charles K. Santo, 48,  was charged with misdemeanors of operating without a license and theft of a motor vehicle, officer Brad Scovil said.

Deanna M. Holden, 44,  was charged with misdemeanor theft by unauthorized use of property, he said.

The two had non extraditable warrants out of Texas for them but since they were non extraditable and they were not in Texas, Rangeley police could not arrest them on the warrants, Scovil said.

A radio alert on a vehicle possibly involved in a theft from a Phillips store was given to police in Franklin County on Wednesday night, Scovil said. A Border Patrol agent spotted the vehicle with a man driving it in Rangeley and alerted Rangeley police. The vehicle was parked at Town and Lake Motel on Main Street, he said.

The couple was found sitting in the back of the car.

Officers Courtney Krause and Scovil ran the Texas license plates and the description did not match the car that was there, Scovil said. They ran the vehicle identification number and it came back as being stolen in Texas.

Rangeley was assisted at the scene by two Border Patrol officers.

The matter remains under investigation, Scovil said.

Santo is being held on $10,000 cash bail and Holden on $5,000 cash bail at the Franklin County jail in Farmington, a corrections officer said. They are scheduled to appear in a Farmington court on Aug. 28.

NOTE: The story has been changed to reflect that Holden and Santo had non extraditable warrants but were not taken into custody on them. It was a reporting error.
