AUBURN — A plan to improve the floor under the city’s Minot Avenue fire station passed its first test Monday night.

Councilors agreed on first reading to use $120,000 for repairs to the Central Fire Station’s vehicle bay. They’ll vote on a final time at their next meeting.

The floor was poured incorrectly when the fire station was first built. It has a slope that allows water to pool in places, according to city staff. Over the years, it’s weakened the concrete in the floor.

The problem was first noticed in 2013, but engineers said repairs were not urgent. People working in the Lewiston Auburn 911 Center noticed bits of concrete falling from the ceiling last summer and the engineers were called back in.

Repairs call for removing concrete, adding drains, re-pouring the floor and adding a waterproof membrane. Work will be done in a way that should not interfere with Lewiston Auburn 911 Call Center below the fire station.

The city is paying for the work with unspent funds from the 2013 bond issue to pay for the project. Part of that bond issue went to purchase new street lights but ended up costing less than estimated.
