FARMINGTON — A transient couple was sentenced Friday to 10 days in jail after they pleaded no contest to stealing a truck in Texas and driving to Maine with suspended licenses, according to court documents.
Rangeley police arrested Charles K. Santo, 48, and Deanna M. Holden, 44, on Thursday.
Judge Lance Walker found Santo guilty of misdemeanor charges of operating without a license and theft of a motor vehicle, according to court documents. Santo had been held on $10,000 cash bail at the county jail until he appeared in District Court.
Walker also found Holden guilty of a misdemeanor charge of theft by unauthorized use of property. Holden had been held on $5,000 cash bail up until her appearance in court.
A Border Patrol agent had spotted a vehicle in Rangeley matching the description of a vehicle on which Franklin County dispatchers had issued a radio alert last week. Rangeley police were notified. The vehicle was parked at Town & Lake Motel on Main Street, Rangeley officer Brad Scovil said.
The couple was found sitting in the back of the vehicle.
Police ran the Texas license plates and the description did not match the vehicle, Scovil said. They ran the vehicle identification number and it came back as being stolen in Texas.
