PORTLAND — Portland Police are warning the community of a possible bad batch of drugs after at least 14 people overdosed on heroin and other opiates in a 24-hour period.
City officials tell the Portland Press Herald two of those 14 overdose victims died between Friday morning and Saturday morning and five were in cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived. The city’s emergency medical services and police usually see five or six overdoses from all drugs during a 24-hour period.
The city’s Department of Health and Human Services is sending a letter Wednesday to pharmacists inviting them to a meeting to discuss the city’s needle exchange program for addicts.
