FARMINGTON — Franklin County commissioners have decided to change their meetings from Tuesday to Monday, starting Aug. 17.

Commissioners will meet on the first and third Mondays of each month.

The Aug. 17 meeting begins at 9 a.m. at the Franklin County Courthouse.

In other business from Tuesday’s meeting, commissioners approved employee hirings for the Sheriff’s Office, Communications and the Franklin County Detention Center.

Franklin County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Steven Lowell asked commissioners to approve adding Rangeley police officer Brad Scovil as a part-time deputy for the department.

Scovil graduated from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in 2014, Lowell said.

Commissioners Gary McGrane and Clyde Barker unanimously agreed.

Franklin County Communications Director Stan Wheeler proposed hiring Katie Huggins for the open position of utility dispatcher. Huggins has worked full time for the Oxford County Regional Communications Center in Paris and is fully certified in all aspects of dispatching, Wheeler said.

Commissioners agreed with the proposed hire.

Unable to be present, Maj. Doug Blauvelt, manager of the jail, left a request with County Clerk Julie Magoon for hiring three full-time employees for the Franklin County Detention Center. Blauvelt proposed hiring James Norton, who has three years of experience with Oxford County Corrections; Brian Rundlett of New Portland, who has experience with Somerset Corrections; and Kirstan Flewelling, who has experience with Piscataquis County, Magoon said.

There were numerous applicants for the positions. These three are all certified and will require little training, she said.

Commissioners asked about the employees initially hired when the jail reopened in April. Except for one employee, they have all moved on, she said.

Commissioners approved hiring the three who were proposed.
