DEAR SUN SPOTS: Regarding divorce, can you tell me what irreconcilable marital differences means? Thanks. — No Name, No Town.

ANSWER: When someone files for divorce in Maine, that person must declare the grounds upon which the divorce is being sought. Maine revised statutes shows Title 19-A: Domestic Relations, Part 2: Married Persons, Chapter 29: Divorce, Subchapter 1: Grounds and Procedures, Paragraph 902: Grounds; defenses, which lists the grounds for divorce and one of them is irreconcilable marital differences.

Irreconcilable marital differences is a “no-fault” grounds for divorce. The term irreconcilable marital differences occurs when you and your spouse have too many differences to remain married and it is neither spouse’s fault. Neither spouse is to blame for the divorce. If you need legal advice, you should consult a lawyer who can explain legal terms.
