PHILLIPS — Parade floats rolled down Main Street on Friday night as throngs of drenched fans cheered enthusiastically during the 58th annual Old Home Days celebration.
Hundreds of people lined the street to take pictures of Dumbo, Woody from “Toy Story,” Minions and Alice in Wonderland, among other characters.
J. D. Maynard, 3, of Salem Township was determined to stay through the hourlong parade, waving enthusiastically to the firetrucks and the Kora Shriners Krazy Kops. The youngster stayed close to his father, John, as the parade passed him, while his mother, Nicole, and 11-month-old brother, Logan, stayed under a canopy shelter nearby.
“I liked the blue dolphin and the big trucks,” he said.
The celebration continues with a full schedule of activities. Starting at 6 a.m. Saturday, the Sandy River Flying Club will host a breakfast at the Lindbergh Airport on Route 4. Morgan Aviation will take the more adventurous for plane rides over the western mountains from 8 a.m. to sunset.
A Cancer Society walk has registration starting at 7:30 a.m. at the Skowhegan Savings Bank paring lot. The Congregational Church will open its doors at 9 a.m. for the Narrow Gauge Quilters’ display of dozens of beautifully made quilts.
The Phillips Historical Society next to the church will feature an arts and crafts sale until 3 p.m. Other events include a lumbering competition, a road race, a bike race, a frog-jumping contest, a guided tour on the Fly Rod Crosby Trail, train rides and an evening of music and dancing at the Phillips Area Community Center.
On Sunday, the flying club will offer a 6 a.m. breakfast and plane rides until 3 p.m. Other events include a chicken shoot contest at the North Franklin Park and a children’s parade down Main Street. In case of rain, the parade will move to the Phillips Area Community Center on Depot Street. Train rides through the Dill Woods will run hourly from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Northwoods Pulling Track will host truck pull competitions to raise money for local charities, and the Sportsmen’s Club will offer a horseshoe tournament. For those looking for more low-key competition, a Duck Derby race will start at the downtown bridge at 1 p.m.
