LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing has announced two special guests for the Dempsey Challenge Two-Day Ride: Paul Sherwen, voice of the Tour de France, and current Union Cycliste Internationale World Team Time Trial champion and professional cyclist Carmen Small.

The ride will take place Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 17-18, beginning and ending at Simard-Payne Memorial Park.

Two-day ride participants will have the opportunity to meet and ride alongside Sherwen and Small in an intimate setting.

Sherwen, one of the best-known voices in cycling, is an expert cycling analyst for NBC Sports Group’s cycling programming on NBC and NBC Sports Network, which includes the Tour de France, Tour of California and USA ProCycling Challenge. 2014 marks Sherwen’s 36th time calling the epic three-week Tour de France. Prior to joining NBC Sports Network, Sherwen worked as a cycling commentator for ABC Sports and ESPN’s coverage of the Tour de France from 1991 to 2000 and served as a cycling analyst for every Olympics since 2004.

As a professional cyclist, Sherwen was a two-time British National Cycling champion in 1986 and 1987, participated in the Tour de France seven times, and raced in all major European tours and one-day classics. He has reported on cycling events all around the world. Since his retirement, he has continued his involvement in the cycling industry.

While he covers cycling for more than 150 days each year, he spends the remainder of his time at home in Uganda, Africa with his wife, Katherine, and two children.

Carmen Small is from Durango, Colo., and had a unique journey to cycling, which included teaching math for 4½ years before pursuing her lifelong dream of becoming a professional cyclist in 2008. Carmen is a two-time UCI World Team Time Trial Champion, as well as a former national Individual Time Trial Champion. She currently rides for Bigla Pro Cycling.
