LISBON FALLS — The Lisbon Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, at the MTM Center on School Street.

Merton Ricker will give a talk about unique, one-of-a-kind social and civic clubs that once thrived in the Lisbon area, focusing on three clubs specifically: Progressive Club, Shakespeare Club and Lobster Club No. 1.

The Progressive Club in Lisbon and the Shakespeare Club in Lisbon Falls were women’s organizations, while Lobster Club No. 1 limited its membership to 30 men and didn’t allow women.

These clubs have all donated their club minutes, newspaper clippings and photographs to the archives of the Lisbon Historical Society.

The presentation will also discuss other unique clubs with peculiar names, including the Lafalot Sewing Club and the Azulikit Club.

Former members of any unique social clubs are encouraged to attend and share memories of their club with the group.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Parking and entrance are at the rear of the building.
