I have a suggestion for persons running for office: Include a plank in your platform that is sure to be popular with the voters. Propose to introduce legislation to limit formal campaigning to begin no sooner than one year before the election date.

No TV ads, no rallies at stadiums or at concert halls or any organized public events. Candidates could, at any time, do all their behind-the-scenes work, such as linking up with big-time cash donors and recruiting grassroots volunteer workers.

There need to be some reasonable restrictions on the length and scope of the political season. What we have now is simply too much time and money devoted to the process.

The next popular plank: Overturn the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision.
