NEW GLOUCESTER — Fight Back Festival will fight cancer Saturday, Sept. 26, at Pineland Farms.

The event is a day of family fun that includes a 5K run/walk along the trails of Pineland Farms, a 1-mile stroll and the Not Dead Yet bike rides of 60, 25 and 10 miles. For children, the festival includes a Kid Zone of activities provided by the Pineland Farms branch of the YMCA of Southern Maine and a Kids Fun Run. A healthy lunch is included in the registration fee. Live music will be provided by local artists Fight at the Family Picnic and the Jason Spooner Band.

Fight Back Festival is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Cancer Community Center. Nicole Avery, Executive Director of the Center, stresses the importance of the event. “In order to provide free programs and services all year long, we need to raise an annual budget of $670,000, and Fight Back Festival accounts for 20% of that budget,” says Avery. “We very much depend on the generosity of the teams and individuals who raise funds through their participation in the festival.”

Festival Co-Chairs Karen Schilling and Melissa Cookson stress how important the Cancer Community Center is to adults affected by cancer. “Karen and I both have close, personal experiences with cancer,” says Cookson. “We know first-hand how valuable Center programs and services can be when you’re faced with either your own cancer diagnosis, or that of a loved one.”

Fight Back Festival registration for both individuals and teams is open until noon on Wednesday, Sept. 23 and in-person registration will be available the day of the festival at Pineland Farms.

The Cancer Community Center provides a wide range of programs and services for Mainers who have been touched by cancer. All programs are offered at no charge to participants and are made possible by the generosity of the community.
