LEWISTON — Brunswick field hockey coach Karin Palin watched her team put up three goals against Lewiston on Tuesday.
Normally, three goals in field hockey game are more than enough, but the Blue Devils recovered behind the hot scoring of Kasey Talarico to earn a 5-3 come-from-behind win.
Trailing 3-2 after two Brunswick goals in a 2:26 span of the second half, Talarico tied the game with 19:49 remaining in regulation. After a goal-saving defensive save by Maggie Phelan on a Dragons rush, Talarico made it a 4-3 contest when she outbattled a pair of Brunswick defenders and slipped a shot behind Dragons goaltender Jordan Van Savage.
Talarico capped her natural hat trick with 1:21 remaining for the two-goal win as the Blue Devils improved to 2-8.
“This is a huge deal for us,” said Talarico, who was celebrating her birthday on Tuesday. “We have been trying so hard and we finally got it. This shows how far we have come. This is a big accomplishment for us.”
In a game that featured back and forth action, Lewiston struck first. Just 3:08 into the contest, Meagan Gosselin collected a penalty corner pass from Ashlynn Belanger before sending a low shot past Van Savage for a 1-0 lead.
Lewiston continued to press, taking 10 of the game’s first 12 shots. It appeared the Blue Devils were going to carry the one-goal lead to the half, with torrential rain making traction a concern.
But Brunswick tied things moments before the halftime horn when Eliza Rudalevidge tipped a pass from Lauren Grocholl past Lewiston keeper Kaylyn Labonte (five saves) for a 1-1 deadlock.
“They felt good at halftime,” Palin said after her team was outshot 10-4 in the first 30 minutes.
Lewiston coach Randy Richardson fired his team up at halftime after surrendering the late goal.
“They needed to step it up, or Brunswick was going to continue to roll,” Richardson said.
“We were worried they were going to cancel the game at halftime with it raining so hard. To give up a goal late in the first half was tough,” Talarico said.
As the rain ended, Lewiston struck for a 2-1 lead 3:29 into the second frame on a Katrina Jacodan goal off a pass from Jazlyn Dumas.
Back came Brunswick, which tied the game on an Ellie Leinert tally off an assist from Erin Marc-Aurele. Moments later, the Dragons had a stunning 3-2 edge when Hannah Escoe gained control of a pass from Rudalevidge and managed to get her shot inches past the goal line.
Talarico had an answer with 19:49 remaining, and less than four minutes after made it a 4-3 Blue Devils lead.
Palin was frustrated to see her team back off after taking the lead.
“It’s super frustrating. We work every practice really hard,” the Brunswick coach said. “It is a problem that we have, and when they do that in a game we take care of that in practices, knowing that they need to go 110 percent the entire game.”
Brunswick had trouble getting past the midfield line over the game’s final 15 minutes as Lewiston peppered the Dragons goal, outshooting Brunswick 23-8 overall and holding an 8-5 edge in penalty corners.
“The remarkable thing about this team is how they rebound,” Richardson said. “They have suffered more one-goal losses than any team that I have coached.”
Van Savage went most of the way in goal for the visitors and finished with 17 saves. Ainsley Harrower saw action for a brief spell in the second half, facing two shots and making a save.
