I had vowed to keep my silence, but Lewiston Mayor Robert Macdonald’s outrageous attacks against the needy have forced me to speak out (Sun Journal, Sept. 25).

Why the vitriol? Why the abject ignorance of the facts? Did Macdonald not take a couple of hours from his busy invectives to embrace what Pope Francis has implored people to contemplate?

This is a nation of immigrants and a nation of human beings who must respect each other and have compassion for each other at all times. We must remind ourselves — there but for the grace of God go I.

Does the system need reform? Of course. But the problem will not be solved by blaming those who need the system, and not by fostering hatred, non-acceptance and contempt toward them.

So many people in this country form opinions based on sound bites and lack of knowledge. I appeal to each and every one to take the time to get educated and think hard before you speak.

Jean Domaingue, Lewiston
