1943 – 2015
LISBON — Joseph W. Iler, 72, of Lisbon passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, Oct. 2.
He was born on June 26, 1943, in Los Angeles County, the son of Joseph P. and Laura (Witham) Iler. He attended local schools and entered the U.S. Air Force, serving for eight years before going into the U.S. Army and Air Force National Guard for another four years. Once out of the military, he attended two years of college to continue his learning.
Joseph was always known for giving to others, whether it was through his 12 years in the military or volunteering for 10 years as a senior companion, he always loved others and looked to teach them about Jesus Christ. In 2015, he was voted Volunteer of the Year out of hundreds of volunteers. During his younger years, he traveled the country, always finding a national park to work at while he was living in that area. Through all his travels, you would always hear that he loved Maine and he considered it home. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren always came first in his eyes, and he loved them deeply.
He is survived by Judy Iler, his ex-wife, best friend and mother of his children; children, Jena Iler of Arizona, Jeffrey Iler of Lewiston, James Iler of Arizona, Joy Letourneau of Greene, and Joel Iler of Lewiston; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five sisters, Sharon O’Hara of Alaska, Linda Hoffman of California, Carol Hickey of Washington, Susan Baumen of Kansas, and Kathy Staley of Arizona; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
