LEWISTON — Two poles were snapped, electrical power was lost and traffic snarled after a crash on Pleasant Street late Friday afternoon.

Police closed off a section of the street at about 3:30 p.m. after an SUV crash brought down poles and wires near the intersection of Pineland Street.

The SUV came to rest at the side of Pleasant Street, its front end curled back to the windshield. It appeared the driver had been heading toward East Avenue when the vehicle struck the pole.

Injuries were reported in the crash but they were not believed to be life-threatening.

Police diverted Pleasant Street traffic onto Stevens Street while cleanup began and Central Maine Power started repairs.

Power to the neighborhoods around the crash site was lost when the wires came down. By 4 p.m., 38 CMP customers were reported without power.

Lewiston Public Works set up barricades around the crash site, while police began their investigation.
