FAYETTE — Gary R. Sandell, 61, died Saturday, Oct. 17, after a long period of declining health. He was born Dec. 3, 1953, in Honolulu, Oahu, T.H., a son of Ormond H. and Doris M. Sandell (Waterhouse). He attended classes while living on various naval bases, graduated from Portland High School and attended the University of Southern Maine and Anderson Business College.
Gary was employed by the state of Maine at Pineland, and with its closing, was transferred to the Augusta offices as a reimbursement specialist. He more recently worked for the Maine Turnpike Authority.
Gary’s lifelong love for books led to an extensive association with Bookland. His other interests included Egyptian archaeology, animal welfare and gardening. He was a member of the Sierra Club.
Surviving are his mother of Raymond; his partner, Kenneth Town of Fayette; a sister, Darla S. Jarvis (William) of New Hampshire; and a niece, Sarah S. Jarvis-Powelson (Nathan) of Raymond.
He was predeceased by his father on March 14, 1991; and by his brother, Brian R. Sandell, on Jan. 29, 2002.
