FARMINGTON — Jenessa Talarico of Lewiston scored two goals as the University of Maine at Farmington cruised to a 6-0 shutout over Castleton University in field hockey action Saturday afternoon.

Rebecca Young and Mara Balboni each scored in their final regular season game in a Beavers’ (9-4) uniform. The Beavers were on the attack for the entire game and outshot the Spartans (4-11) by a margin of 31-8, and won the penalty corner battle, as well, 13-8.

Goalie Meeghan Doris blocked 19 shots in net for Castleton, while goalie patty Smith recorded five saves to earn the shutout win.

Middlebury 5, Bates 0

LEWISTON — Pam Schulman and Annie Leonard scored two goals apiece to lead Middlebury College to a 5-0 NESCAC victory over Bates College in field hockey action Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers 913-1) outshot Bates by a 13-1 margin, requiring no saves from goalie Emily Miller in her fifth shutout of the season.

Goalie Cristina Vega made on save for the Bobcats (6-8) in the second half. Katie Knox started in goal for Bates and made three saves in the first half.

Bates 2, Middlebury 0

LEWISTON — Junior Allison Hill turned in a brilliant performance as Bates secured a 2-0 victory over Middlebury in women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.

Hill was everywhere for the Bobcats (6-5-3). She made two defensive saves and delivered an assist on the first goal of the game on a corner kick.

The Panthers (5-4-5) made a push in the 42nd minute as Amanda Hotvedt beat keeper Sarah McCarthy and appeared to have a clear shot at the goal. But, Hill was in perfect position to clear the ball just as it was about to go in the net.

In the 83rd minute, first-year Olivia Amdur found senior Leah Humes for the second goal and of the match.

UMaine-Farmington 3, Lyndon State 2

FARMINGTON — Katie Clark scored the decisive goal in the 63rd minute as the University of Maine at Farmington dispatched Lyndon State College 3-2 in NAC women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.

Ashley Gleason only needed eight and a half minutes to give the Beavers (7-9-1) the lead in the first half. Bridget Humphrey passed a through ball to Gleason, who jumped up for the header and lined the shot into the right side of the net.

The Hornets (2-12-1) clawed back into the contest with less than five minutes remaining behind Kajah Rooke’s unassisted goal on a free kick. But, the Beavers’ defense stepped up and secured the win in the final minutes.

Men’s soccer

Middlebury 4, Bates 1

LEWISTON — Middlebury scored four unanswered goals in the second half to defeat Bates College 4-1 in men’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats (7-5-2) struggled offensively as they only tallied three shots in the match. But, in just the third minute of action, Noah Riskind found the back of the net on a header for the first goal of his career on an assist from David Murphy.

Though Bates led 1-0 at the break, the Panthers (11-2-1) were able to make use of their height advantage in the second half. Greg Conrad scored in the 60th minute to even the match at one on an assist from Adam Glaser.

UMaine-Farmington 0, Lyndon State 0 (2OT)

FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington drew its third double overtime game of the season with a double overtime scoreless tie against Lyndon State college in NAC men’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.

The Beavers (5-9-3) outshot the Hornets, 31-14, in the contest. Farmington had prime scoring chances in the second half from Yusuf Yama and Ibrahim Achekh. But, both of their shots sailed past the goal post.

Chris Roberts and Matt Wilson split time during the contest with Roberts saving a shot and Wilson stopping a pair. Lyndon’s keeper Matt LeClair had a busy afternoon with 15 saves.

Women’s basektball

CMCC 72, UNB at St. John 56

AUBURN — Allie Ablondi led the charge with 18 points and seven rebounds as Central Maine Community College scooped up a 72-56 victory over the University of New Brunswick at St. John at the 21st Annual Can-Am Tournament in Auburn on Saturday.

Alex Rowe of South Paris recorded her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Mustangs. Frankie Lally of Auburn was the third starter in double figures with 11 points.

The Seawolves were paced by Kelsey Simon, who knocked in four first half three-pointers on her way to a team-high 16 points.

Freshman guard Samantha Maxfield had another impressive outing off the bench, ripping down a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with her five points for the Mustangs.

In her first game, freshman guard Nicole Hamblin dished out a team-high five assists to go with five rebounds for Central Maine.
