The Rev. Douglas Taylor should stick to religion and leave constitutional law to those who know something about it. His recent letter (Oct. 29) takes mayoral candidate Ben Chin to task for calling out the moronic signs put up by local landlord Joe Dunne that clumsily attacked and degraded Chin’s nationality. The signs also dragged in a healthy bit of red-baiting for good measure.

Immediately upon their discovery on buildings around town, those signs were universally panned by conservatives, progressives, Republicans and Democrats alike. There were reports about them across the country, showing Lewiston in a very negative light.

Chin never demanded their removal, but the bright light of decency shown on them was the reason for their quick demise.

Freedom of speech was never brought into question except by those who, like Taylor, believe that the First Amendment to the Constitution is only valid when the opinions expressed match their own.
