Marine Corps, Veterans celebration

WAYNE — The 240th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps and Veterans Day will be celebrated at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Cary Memorial Library’s Williams House, 14 Old Winthrop Road.

There will be a social hour with hors d’oeuvres, and toasts to all service branches. The Marines will be landing with a cake, and there will be a birthday message and cake-cutting ceremony.

The public is invited.

Maine Wildlife Park closing for the season on Veterans Day

GRAY — The Maine Wildlife Park will close for the 2015 season at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, Veterans Day.

The park will recognize and thank all past and present Maine military personnel and veterans for their service by offering free park admission for veterans and their immediate families.

Mexico High ’59 to meet

MEXICO — The Mexico High School Class of 1959 will meet at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Far East Restaurant.

Spouses and significant others are welcome.

Ecker guest speaker at Whitman Library

WOODSTOCK — Emily Ecker of Bryant Pond will be the guest speaker at the Whitman Memorial Library at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12.

Ecker will give a talk about a hiking trip in Olympic and Mt. Rainier national parks in Washington that she took with her husband, Marcel Polak.  

The parks are an example of three distinct ecological environments. There will be a slideshow and maps.

The program is open to the public at no charge and light refreshments will be served.

Society to hear talk on Civil War

WATERFORD — The final meeting of the year for the Waterford Historical Society will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Wilkins House, Waterford Flat.
 
The speaker will be Dr. Stanley Howe, former director of the Moses Mason House at the Bethel Historical Society.

Howe, who has a connection to Waterford, will speak about the Civil War and the experiences of O’Neil Robinson Jr., who was born in Bethel but died in Waterford.

Attendees are asked to bring any Civil War artifacts or stories to share with the WHS. There will be potluck refreshments.

Third Annual Women Veterans’ Luncheon

RUMFORD — The Rumford American Legion Post 24, along with the Women Veterans’ Advisory Committee Department Of Maine American Legion, will host the Third Annual Women Veteran’s Luncheon on Saturday, Nov. 14. 

The morning of pampering will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. and speakers will follow.

The Department Service Officer and the Women Veteran’s Program Manager LaRhonda Harris will be there with important information around the women’s health care systems.

Those planning on attending should RSVP by Thursday, Nov. 12, by calling 207-357-3289.

Attendees do not need to be members of the American Legion to attend the event.

TURNER — The Turner Grange Holiday Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14.

Christmas fair Nov. 14

TURNER — A Christmas fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Turner Universalist Church vestry on Turner Center Road, Route 117, across from the old Leavitt Institute.

Crafts, white elephants, baked goods, and a lunch of soup and/or hot dogs will be available.

MCF opens leadersip initiatve

PORTLAND/ELLSWORTH — The Maine Community Foundation is seeking applications from Maine-based leadership development organizations and programs to join its Leadership Learning Collaborative.

The one-year Leadership Learning Collaborative program is designed for the staff and directors of leadership programs in Maine. Participants will have the opportunity to identify and develop initiatives that will build capacity for their programs. They will explore curriculum and delivery of leadership programs, alumni engagement, communicating the impact of their programs, and collaboration within the field. Participating organizations will also have the opportunity to apply for capacity-building grants through a competitive process.

Buttons 4 Babes meetings

JAY — Buttons 4 Babes volunteers meet at Otis Federal Credit Union every second and fourth Tuesday from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the community room on the first floor.

The Button Bee creates bracelets to raise funds for children in critical need and for the local homeless shelter. Materials are available and new volunteers are welcome.

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church coat closet open

WILTON — St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 59 High St., has announced it has free, gently used coats and jackets for adults and children available.

The church is open most mornings after 9 a.m., but it’s recommended that those planning on visiting call 207-645-2639 to confirm someone is available. Those visiting should enter through the back door by the parking lot.
