JAY — A local man is accused of having 67 pounds of marijuana, eight marijuana plants and concentrated doses of THC at his North Jay residence, Detective Michael Mejia said Monday.

He arrested John Sullivan, 34, Friday on a warrant issued by the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency charging felony aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs and unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs, and a misdemeanor charge of violation of condition of release.

The street value of the marijuana is estimated at more than $120,000, Mejia said.

Jay police assisted drug agents in the case after residents complained of smelling marijuana on Main Street in North Jay.

Police went to the residence Thursday to see if the person was a medical marijuana patient. Police could also smell marijuana, Mejia said. Sullivan said he was a patient but was not able to produce any documentation and his statements were inconsistent, Mejia said.

A request to enter the residence to see what documentation Sullivan had was denied as was consent to a search.

Mejia left the residence to get a search warrant while other Jay police officers and a drug agent stood by. Sullivan left the home prior to Mejia returning with the warrant.

More than 60 pounds of marijuana was found; some ground up, some packaged and some growing.

Sullivan was also using processed marijuana to manufacture concentrated doses of THC by using a solvent to make an oil, Mejia said. THC is the chemical responsible for most of marijuana’s psychological effects, according to online sources.

Three firearms were also seized, raising a drug charge to aggravated and Class A felony, he said. A conviction on the charge carries a penalty of up to 30 years in prison and a $50,000 fine.

Sullivan was being held without bail Monday morning at the Franklin County jail in Farmington pending an appearance before a judge.
