PORTLAND — Maine’s largest city is seeking proposals to build a municipal network that would offer affordable high-speed broadband to residents and businesses.
The Portland Press Herald reports the city issued the request last week looking to give downtown buildings a fiber-optic connection to new municipal buildings.
Portland currently has a fiber-optic network connecting municipal buildings, which does not service nearby residential or commercial properties.
The plan is similar to proposals in South Portland and Sanford. South Portland announced last fall that it would build a 4-mile network, and Sanford announced in September that it would help pay for a 32-mile municipal broadband network.
The Biddeford-based Great Works Internet, which has won bids in Rockport, South Portland and Sanford to build municipal networks, says it is interested in the job.
