FARMINGTON — Franklin County commissioners voted Monday to promote corrections officer Scott Nichols Jr. of Wilton to sergeant at the jail.
Assistant Administrator Lt. John Donald, recently promoted from sergeant, said that there was a written exam and a five-member board that conducted oral board interviews.
There were three “really well-qualified” candidates, Donald said, and Nichols stood “head and shoulders above the rest.”
Nichols will replace Donald as a sergeant supervisor.
The five people who served on the interview board were Donald, County Clerk Julie Magoon, Jail Administrator Major Doug Blauvelt, county Lt. David St. Laurent, and a sergeant from Somerset County.
Nichols is the son of Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr.
In the chain of command, Nichols Jr. will report to Donald, then Blauvelt and then Chief Deputy Steven Lowell. Sheriff Nichols is at the top of the chain.
Nichols Jr. was hired at the jail in September 2014. He also worked at the Somerset County Jail in Madison for a year. He served in the U.S. Army from 2004-10 and had three combat deployments.
