1930 – 2015

HALLOWELL — Rene Adrien Castonguay, 85, formerly of Jay, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, at the Woodlands Assisted Living Facility in Hallowell, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born March 3, 1930, in Livermore Falls, the son of Peter and Carmel (Labine) Castonguay. He attended St. Rose School in Jay and was a 1951 graduate of Livermore Falls High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 in Italy during the Korean War. Rene worked most of his adult years as a millwright for International Paper Company at the Otis and Androscoggin Mills in Jay. Following the strike at International Paper, he worked at Bath Iron Works “BIW” until his retirement. Rene was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church, a member of the Frank L. Mitchell, V.F.W Post No. 3335 and a member of the United Paperworker’s International Union Local 14.

On May 5, 1956, at St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay, he married Anita Perreault. They raised their four children in the beautiful home he built on Cortland Road in Jay. Rene was well known in the community as being a hard worker. If he was not working at the mill, he was working on his home, on his property on Round Pond or helping family and friends with anything that was needed. Rene’s main goal in life was being a good son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and he certainly accomplished that. He was the patriarch, the provider, the protector of his family and will be sadly missed.

He leaves behind his children, Sharon Costello and her husband, Jerry, of Mount Vernon, Sheila Yates and her husband, Jeffrey, of Wilton, Lorelei Purrington and her husband, Ross, of Portland; and his son, Alan Castonguay and his wife, Wendy, of Livermore; grandchildren, Craig Coolidge and his partner, Amy, of Rockland, Mandi Howard and her husband, Eric, of Readfield, Chet Coolidge and his wife, Lindsay, of Wilton, Celina Marden and her husband, Brad, of Portland, Heidi Bouchard and her husband, Ryan, of Kittery and Michael and Travis Castonguay of Livermore. He also leaves behind great-grandchildren, Easton Howard, Cody Coolidge, Giana Marden and Wyatt Bouchard; siblings, Paul Castonguay Jackie Mercier, Theresa Maranda, Patricia Nadeau, Claudette Lemelin all of Livermore, Anita Couture of Livemore Falls and Pauline Dion of Jay; and many nieces, nephews, in-laws and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents; his loving wife of 59 years, Anita Castonguay; sisters, Louise Noelette, Lorraine Cote, Gloria Henry and Marguerite Williamson; and his brother, Roger Castonguay.

The family would like to thank Dr. Michele Knapp and Beacon Hospice for the wonderful medical care provided to Rene during the last few months. A special thank-you to the staff at Woodlands Memory Care in Hallowell where Rene had resided for the past 15 months. They cared for him with love, dignity, respect and kindness. They became part of our family.
