The Old Town Police Department will be offering a basic firearms safety course at 6 p.m. on Dec. 10.
Participants will be introduced to handguns and how they work. Different examples of handguns will be presented to participants. The major components and their operations will be explained and demonstrated. Including the four main parts to a semi-automatic – slide, frame, barrel, and magazine; the main parts to a revolver – cylinder, hammer, frame and barrel; home safety – trigger lock, cable lock, gun locker, and touch safe; and securing information about your firearm in the event of theft.
Safety on the shooting range will also be covered., including safety equipment – eye and ear protection and having a hat with visor; range rules – firing line, hot and cold range, and ammunition types.
Additionally, officers will talk about Maine’s new concealed carry law. Each participant will be given a copy of the new law to explain it and how it pertains to them, including what is considered concealed carry; who is legally allowed to conceal carry; prohibited places to carry; the requirements to notify law enforcement when stopped and instructions on commands given as a result of stops and other encounters; and violations of not notifying la w enforcement during an encounter.
