There have been many exchanges of opinions regarding Gov. Paul LePage’s stand on allowing Syrian refugees to enter not only Maine, but the United States as well.

I would ask Gov. LePage and all like-minded folks to read Emma Lazarus’s sonnet called “The New Colossus,” which has been affixed to the Statue of Liberty since 1886. After almost 130 years, is it time we added a P.S., stating “Except Syrian Refugees”?

Perhaps it is time we dismantle our beloved statue because leaving her there makes us a nation of hypocrites.

I prefer to think we are better than that.
