1931 – 2015

ROCKPORT — John S. “Jack” McCormick Jr., 84, quietly slipped the bonds of this life at his home early Wednesday, Dec. 2, following an extended illness.

He was born in Starks, July 26, 1931, the son of John S. and Lizzy E. Brackett McCormick. Educated in local schools, he was a 1949 graduate of Farmington High School and a 1958 graduate of the University of Maine at Orono.

After one semester at UMO, he entered the U.S. Air Force where he served from 1950 to 1953. During his enlistment, he met and fell in love with Dorothy M. ‘Suzie’ Lamkin. They were married July 8, 1952, at Travis Air Force Base Chapel, Fairfield, Calif.

A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Jack was an amazing man who has had many titles in 84 years: son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, papa, great-grandfather, surveyor, pizza parlor worker, real estate broker, treehouse builder, draftsman in the USAF, godfather, civil engineer, student, uncle, business owner, nephew, boss, cousin, state representative, friend, school board member, fieldstone fireplace mason, bank director, ditch digger, soda jerk, hospital board chairman, “Jack”-of-all-trades, wheelchair repairman, world traveler, cooked cheerios maker, carpenter, shop owner, classmate, builder, toymaker, violin player, tractor aficionado, bartender, cribbage player, farmer, role model, library worker, Rotarian, volunteer, cheerleader, volunteer fireman, veteran and patriarch.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Bonny Hadaris and Chris of Saco; John Scott McCormick and Kristin of Fairfax, Va.; Patricia Graffam and Scott of Norway; Kathleen O’Brien and Steve of Rockport; Christopher McCormick and Krista of Cooper; Jeffery McCormick and Sherry of Union; Karen Blackwell and Greg of Rockport; two brothers and their wives, George ‘Bud’ McCormick and Minnie of Dover-Foxcroft, William ‘Ross’ McCormick and Rose Mary of New Sharon; one sister, Marie Day of Lakeville Plantation; 20 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren with two more on the way; and several nieces and nephews.

Other than his parents, Jack was predeceased by one son, Kevin James McCormick on June 28, 1963; one grandchild, Tara O’Brien; and one sister, Noreen Pillsbury.
