Daughters of Union Veterans meet

NORWAY — The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865, Hannah F. Richardson Tent 19, Stoneham, held their second nomination of officers on Nov. 18 at the home of Marilyn Jones. 

It was voted to meet on the fourth Thursday of the month, beginning in April. 

The next meeting will be held Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016, at the same location.

Ledgeview holding Christmas sale

WEST PARIS — The Ledgeview Living Center will host a four-day Christmas sale from Tuesday to Friday, Dec. 8 to 11.

The hours will be from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday, and from 9:30 a.m. to noon Friday.

Wreath-making class at SMAE

LIVERMORE FALLS — Spruce Mountain Adult Education will hold a wreath-making course from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 9 Cedar St.

Supplies will be provided, but participants may bring bows, bells or pine cones for extra flare.

Admission for the class is $25.

Vigil to remember those affected by violence

WILTON — A candlelight vigil will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, at the Wilton United Methodist Church parking lot on Main St.

Residents Lisa Lindsay and Marylena Chaisson worked to organize the event after perceiving a need to recognize the ongoing violence in the world.

Organizers emphasize that this is not a rally or a space for political debate, but just to remember those affected by violence throughout the world. Attendees are asked to be respectful of the intentions of the vigil.

There will be lighting of candles, time for quiet reflection, and time for those who wish to offer prayers.

The event is open to the public and all are welcome.

Santa Claus to visit Jay

JAY — Santa Claus is coming to the Jay Town Office from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9.

Free pictures will be taken with Santa and will be available for pick up on Tuesday, Dec. 15.

Candy and coloring books will be offered to children while supplies last.

‘Souper’ supper Dec. 11

Heywood Club to meet

PARIS — The Heywood Club of Norway will hold its annual Christmas meeting Monday, Dec. 14, at Market Square Restaurant in South Paris.

Social hour will start at 5:30 p.m., and dinner will be at 6 p.m. Members will have the option to order off the menu, and will pay for their own meal and beverages.

This is the last meeting until spring, and reservations are required by Friday, Dec. 11.

A donation will be collected and given to a needy cause in the area.

In case of inclement weather, as long as the restaurant stays open, the club will still hold the meeting.

Wreath laying ceremony planned

STARKS — Wreaths Across America will have a wreath laying ceremony at the Brake Hill Cemetery in Starks at noon on Saturday, Dec. 12.  

Helen Sprague is the location leader.  She is a member of the Abigail Wolcott Ellsworth chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Windsor, Conn.

The Tardiff-Belanger Post No. 39 American Legion, in Madison, will perform the ceremony.

In addition to the seven ceremonial wreaths, Lemuel Collins, a Revolutionary soldier, will be honored.

The event is free and open to the public.  

Swingin’ Bears hosting Teddy Bear dance

PARIS — The Swingin’ Bears Square Dance Club will host its annual Teddy Bear dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, in the Oxford Hills Middle School cafeteria.

The dance will support Right Start for Kids, a Community Concepts program. Donations of new stuffed toys will be accepted.

Ray Hilton, caller, will yodel during singing calls. The levels of dancing will be Mainstream and Plus. Carol Arsenault will cue the rounds.

Refreshments will be served at intermission. There will be door prizes and a 50/50 drawing. Cost is $7 per person. Nondancers are free.

Honey Bee Club plans party

PARIS — The Oxford Hills Honey Bee Club potluck holiday party is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at the Oxford County Extension Center, 9 Olson Road.

Linwood Swett will give a demonstration on insulating hives with Styrofoam. Everyone is welcome.

Friends of the Library sale

WAYNE — The third annual Friends of the Library Holiday Sale will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at the Williams House, 14 Old Winthrop Road.

The sale will be a place for the community to shop locally for home-baked goods and unique gifts.

A wide selection of homemade sweets and savories will be featured including: Christmas cookies, pies and cakes, jams, Christmas candy, cinnamon sugar pecans, hot and spicy mixed nuts and cheese biscuits. Homemade soups and quiche will be offered for lunch between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., and take out will be available.

The Williams House Book Sale will be open and specially stocked with many nearly new books.

The boutique will highlight Christmas decorations and gifts for the entire family.

FARMINGTON — Trinity United Methodist Church will host a public baked bean and casserole supper from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12.
