1916 – 2015
WATERVILLE — Stanford Davis Merrill, 99, died Saturday, Dec. 5, at Park Residence in Waterville.
He was born in South Paris on Nov. 5, 1916, the son of Dr. Chester M. and Lulu (Davis) Merrill. He grew up in South Paris, graduating from South Paris High School in 1935. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School in 1939.
Dr. Merrill conducted a general veterinary practice with his father in South Paris for seven years. He moved to Augusta in 1946 where he conducted a large animal practice for seven years. He then took a position with the Maine Department of Agriculture where he organized the state poultry and meat inspection programs, retiring in 1976. These programs were later adopted by the federal matching programs.
Dr. Merrill was a member of the Maine Veterinary Medical Association, serving as its president in 1948 and 1949, and as secretary-editor for six years. He also belonged to the American Veterinary Medical Association, Maine State Employees Association and Maine Retirees Association.
Dr. Merrill was a member of the Oakland United Baptist Church where he sang in the choir for six years. His 45-year membership in the Penney Memorial United Baptist Church of Augusta included serving in several offices and singing in the adult choir. His hobbies included gardening, travel and carpentry.
He is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Golding; his daughter, Patricia L. Moulton and her husband, William G., Of Pittston; grandson, Peter and wife, Laurie Rodrigue, and children, Samuel and Grace; granddaughter, Lynne Moulton and husband, Eric Kaldor, and children, Leo and Isaac; brother-in-law, Charles Howe and wife, Lois, of Bryant Pond.
He was predeceased in 1993 by Evelyn Howe Merrill, his first wife of 51 years; by a son, David, who died in 1983; and by a sister, Jeannette Marie Soule, who died in 1995. He was also married to the former Helen Vinal Hilton who died in 1995.
