LISBON FALLS — Most Lisbon-area residents (including people from Durham, Pejepscot, and Bowdoin) know about families who came here from the Slovakia region of Europe a century ago. In fact, many may have family Slovak connections.

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, a special meeting of the Lisbon Historical Society will feature a talk by Deeb Keamy at the MTM Center on School Street in Lisbon Falls. He calls his talk “Falcons in the Pines: A Database of Slovak Families in Lisbon, Topsham, Durham and Bowdoin.” Keamy explains that “falcon” is “sokol” in Slovak, and the Sokol movement established gymnastics teams at numerous Slovak clubs throughout the United States, including the Slovak Catholic Association in Lisbon Falls.

Keamy will present the results of his extensive research on the many Slovak families who have settled in the area. His research includes the family names, the towns and countries from which the families came to the U.S.; the family names in their original languages, as well as their meanings. He has also collected information and family stories of some of those who came here to settle and work. He has nearly 400 Slovak family names from the area.

At present, Keamy is visiting Slovakia, collecting even more information to add to his extensive database. Printouts of the many Slovak family names and details he has compiled will be available for those attending who have Slovak connections, and they may be able to find information about their families in the database.

This special meeting of the society will be in Room 10 at the front of the MTM Center, so it will be more convenient to use the front entrance. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the presentation will begin at 7 p.m. Visit the Lisbon Historical Society Facebook page for more information, or call 353-8510.
