JAY — A local man has been charged with sexually molesting a girl under the age of 12, according to police.

Detective Michael Mejia arrested Terry L. Greenleaf, 50, of Jay on Friday on a felony charge of unlawful sexual contact, he said.

Mejia said the Police Department learned of allegations of child abuse last week and began an investigation. A representative of the Androscoggin Children’s Advocacy Center interviewed the child, and Mejia conducted an interview with Greenleaf. 

Greenleaf was booked at the Franklin County jail in Farmington and released on $5,000 cash bail Friday. He is scheduled to appear in a Farmington court Feb. 23.

A conviction on the charge carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison.
