1923 – 2016
FARMINGTON — William B. Friberg, 92, of Farmington, passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 4, at the Sandy River Center in Farmington.
Bill was born March 29, 1923, a son of Gustaf and Ruth (Call) Friberg. He grew up in Massachusetts, where he graduated from Swampscott High School in 1941. He later went on to graduate from Springfield College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree.
Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army in January 1943 and proudly served his country during World War II. He was stationed in Northern Italy where he served as a staff sergeant in the 10th Mountain division (ski troops), notably receiving two Bronze Stars. He was honorably discharged in November 1945.
For many years, Bill worked as a physical education teacher in Marshfield, Mass. During the summer, he worked as a lifeguard for many of the local beaches. He was an active man who enjoyed being outdoors, especially snowmobiling and downhill skiing.
After his retirement, Bill moved to Maine to be closer to his brother, Robert. Bill had a way of capturing the hearts of those around him; relatives, health care providers, civil servants and other members of the public often turned into friends who genuinely cared about Bill and his well-being. He especially loved his beloved dog and companion, Spirit.
Bill is survived by his daughter, Barbara Tucker and her husband, Charles of Salt Lake City, Utah; and son, William Nichols of Connecticut; a brother, Robert Friberg and his wife, Mary-Louise, of Temple; grandchildren, Zachary Arpino and Joe Arpino; and nieces and nephews, Janet Darling, Robert Carlin, Laurel Friberg, Andrea Etzel, Sharon Phillips, Judy Hayden, Marly Danforth, Robert Friberg Jr., and Bernie Friberg.
He was predeceased by his sister, Virginia Carlin.
