1929 – 2016

AUGUSTA — Gerard Napoleon Rioux, 86, a longtime resident of Cobbossee Road, Monmouth, died early Monday morning, Jan. 11, at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Augusta where he had recently become a resident.

He was born in Lewiston on Aug. 13, 1929, the son of Rudolphe J. and Yvonne M. (Goyette) Rioux-Knowles. He was educated in the grammar schools of Lewiston and was a graduate of Lewiston High School. Gerard served honorably with the U.S. Army during the early 1950s and served with the Army Reserve for several years following his discharge from active duty.

On May 15, 1954, he married Dolores J. Duquette in Lewiston. Gerard and Dolores enjoyed 61 years of marriage. He was a self-employed farmer and trucker for most of his life. He raised cattle, many species of birds and other livestock. He also hauled grain and sawdust, often with 18-wheelers, all over the state of Maine. Gerard was an active hunter, guide and sportsman in both Maine and Canada. He enjoyed many hunting trips over the years for elk and deer in Colorado, Montana and Idaho, most often accompanied by family members. He was also a lifelong Maine hunter and hunted deer, moose and bear.

Survivors include his wife, Delores of Monmouth; six sons, Paul G. and wife, Debbie, Patrick N. and wife, Donna, Roger D. and partner, Vanessa Bowler, Richard L. and David J., all of Monmouth, and Mark A. and wife, Elena, of Johnstown, Colo.; two daughters, Jane D. Rioux and husband, Tom Gatto, of Germany and Claire M. Walker and husband, Alan, of Monmouth; one brother, Julien B. Rioux and wife, Irene, of Pawtucket, Conn.; seven grandchildren, Daniel, Tim, Angela, Jason, Candace, Lucas and Marisa; and five great-grandchildren.
