1922 – 2016

AUBURN — June A. Scales, of Auburn, died on Thursday, Jan. 28.

She was born May 15, 1922, the child of Harry M. Austin and Emma A. (Sawyer) Austin of Sabattus. June was educated in Sabattus schools and graduated from Sabattus High School in 1940. After completing the course at Auburn Maine School of Commerce, she was employed for 14 years as secretary to attorney John G. Marshall of Auburn.

She married L. Damon Scales Jr. on Aug. 18, 1956, and they had three sons, Jonathan A. Scales of Auburn, Timothy L. Scales of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Christopher G. Scales of Exeter, N.H.

June was for many years a member of High Street Congregational Church in Auburn, where she took part in the Parish Guild and served at various times on the boards of Christian Education, Church and Community and Diaconate. In earlier years, she had been active in the YWCA.

In recent years, she had been president of the Auburn Home for Aged Women and served as a director of the Friends of Auburn Public Library.

She is survived by her sons; four grandchildren, Laura and Rebecca of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Matthew and William of Exeter, N.H.; three sisters, Evelyn Given of Hereford, Ariz., Barbara Sanborn of Wales, and Marilyn Thorpe of Scarborough; and by several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, L. Damon Scales Jr.; and brother, Frederick Austin.
