1937 – 2016

NORWAY — Duane E. “Mike” Dean, of Norway, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 31.

Mike was born in Greenville on July 13, 1937, to Merle J. and Beryl A. Dean. He graduated from Greenville High School in 1955 and then attended Gorham State Teachers College and graduated in 1960 with a degree in industrial arts education.

While at GSTC, he met and married the love of his life, Gloria Blake. He taught for the Portland school district for 25 years. After retiring from teaching, he worked for a number of construction companies.

Mike’s greatest joy came from his woodworking hobby, where he crafted scale replica birdhouses of Maine landmarks and Christmas sleighs. It thrilled him to give his creations to friends and family. He loved using his craftsman skills to help those in need. His other greatest joys were his five grandchildren and great-grandson of whom he often regaled stories. Mike’s death was very sudden and unexpected.

He is survived by a sister, Cheryl Nelson, and her husband, Craig, of Farmingdale; son, Mark A. Dean of Portland and his children, Gina and Anthony Dean; son, Peter M. Dean and his wife, Peggy, of Gorham and their children, Rebecca, Marshall and Blake Dean; and cherished great-grandson, Hunter Dean.

He was predeceased by his mother and father; a brother, Warren “Red” Dean of Industry; and his beloved wife, Gloria Dean.
