CAMDEN (AP) — The warm weather has taken a toll on the National Toboggan Championships, forcing organizers to truncate the weekend competition in Maine and move it to a new location.
Officials said that the three-day event will be reduced to one day — on Saturday. And it will be moved to the Camden Snow Bowl ski hill instead of the 400-foot chute.
Chairwoman Holly Edwards called the decision “heartbreaking” but she said it was better to have a one-day event than to cancel it altogether.
Officials are concerned about thin ice and open patches of water on the frozen Hosmer Pond where toboggans emerge from the chute after hitting speeds up to 40 mph. Edwards said some of the faster toboggans could’ve skidded over the ice and into the water.
