FALMOUTH, Mass. — Aaron Deady scored twice to lead the Cape Cod Islanders to a 5-3 win over the Lewiston/Auburn Fighting Spirit on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Islanders extended their lead over the Fighting Spirit in the Eastern Conference standings to 11 points. The Islanders have 62 to lead the conference. L/A, with 51, is in second place. 

Mitchell Eldridge, Chris O’Donnell and Frank Oakley also scored for the Islanders

Thomas Puetz had a goal and an assist to lead the Fighting Spirit, while Colby Siering and goaltender Zachary Barry also scored.

Barry made 28 saves in the loss while Anton Zemba stopped 33 shots in the win.

High School Hockey

Biddeford 5, Edward Little 4

BIDDEFORD — The Biddeford Tigers scored four times in the first period and held onto the 5-4 win over the Edward Little Red Eddies at the Biddeford Ice Arena Saturday afternoon.

Three of the four goals in the first period came on the power play.

Kerry Crepeau had a goal and two assists for the Tigers (7-9)  while Colin Lavigne, Dylan Demers and Ricky Ruck each had a goal and an assist. Zack Thompson also had a goal.

EL (7-8) roared back in the second third as they made it 4-3 with three straight goals before Crepeau scoring the eventual game winner.

Cody Woodward had a pair goals for the Red Eddies while Jason Cote and Liam Benson also scored.

Tom Green made 35 saves for the victory while Ben Feldman and Devin Dumont combined to make 21 saves in the loss.  

Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse 7, Windham/Westbrook 1

BRUNSWICK — Noah Austin had five points — a hat trick and two helpers — as Mt. Ararat/Morse/Lisbon toppled Windham/Westbrook 7-1 on Saturday.

Mark Abreu also had five points, inclduing four assists. Tyler Lacascio, Tyler Halls and Sam Alexander rounded out the scoring for the Eagles (8-5-1).

Cade Charron stopped 13 saves for the victory.

Zach Callahan notched the lone goal for Windham/Westbrook (11-4), while Alex Leblanc and Sean White combined to make 31 saves in the losing effort.

Women’s basketball

Castleton 59, UMaine-Farmington 38

FARMINGTON — Jade Desroches and Bryanna duPont led Castleton Univserity with 11 points each in a 59-38 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington in NAC women’s basketball action at Dearborn Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

Meghan Smith was the leading scorer for the Beavers (11-9) with 13 pionts, seven reboudns and an assist. kennadi Grover scored six points for Farmington and grabbed three rebounds.

Cheyenne Malloy and Bridget Humphrey added five points apiece with Humphry tallying a team-high nine rebounds.

The Spartans (17-4) found themselves down by one early in the third quarter on a free throw from Smith. But, Castleton closed out the quarter strong and stayed hot as they opened the fourth quarter on a 19-2 run to seal the conference win.

CMCC 95, Hampshire 29

AUBURN — Alex Rowe of Paris notched a career-high 31 points as Central Maine Community College took a dominant 95-29 victory over Hampshire College in women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon.

Frankie Lally of Auburn contributed a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds for the Mustangs (18-7). Macy Welch came off the bench to score 11 points, while Nicole Hamblin finished with 10 points.

Adelle Pitsas led the Black Sheep with 13 points in the losing effort.

Maine 72, UMBC 38

BALTIMORE, Md. — Bella Swan poured in a career-high 21 points as the University of Maine defeated the University of Maryland Baltimore County 72-38 in America East women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon.

The Black Bear (18-7) defense was in fine form again. They held their second opponent in three games to just 38 points and turned 20 Retriever mishaps into a 25-6 advantage in points.

Sigi Koizar finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals, while Liz Wood added 10 points for Maine.

Bates 77, Trinity 61

HARTFORD, Conn. — Chelsea Nason scoerd a career-high 22 pionts and Nina Davenport tallied a double-double with 22 pionts and a career-high 15 rebounds to lead Bates to a 77-61 victory over Trinity College in NESCAC women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon.

Allie Coppola notched a double-double as well with 10 points and 10 boards for the Bobcats (7-13). Bernadette put together a big game assist with 15 points, four rebounds and four assists for Bates.

Bates trailed by two late in the first quarter. But, Davenport nailed a three-pointer to put the Bobcats up 13-12 and followed with another trey to secure a permanent lead.

Men’s basketball

CMCC 90, Hampshire 57

AUBURN — Rob Skinner tabulated a game-high 17 points as the Central Maine Community College galloped to a 90-57 victory over Hampshire College in men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon.

The Black Sheep played well in the first half as the Mustangs (18-7) managed a slight 37-30 lead at intermission.

Carrington Miller contributed 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while Tanner Daigle added another 10 points and five rebounds for Central Maine.

UMBC 83, Maine 79

PORTLAND — Jairus Lyles netted a spectacular 37 points as the University of Maryland Baltimore County edged the University of Maine 83-79 in men’s basketball action at the Portland Expo Saturday afternoon.

The Black Bears, trailing by eight midway through the first half, put together a 14-5, capped by a 3-pointer in transition by Ilija Stojiljkovic, to take their first lead of the game.

The Retrievers battled back to take a four point edge two minutes later, and ended the half on a 7-2 run to carry a 44-39 lead into the break.

The teams traded leads and tied the game for the seventh time int he second half, but UMBC hung on down the stretch.

Castleton 62, UMaine-Farmington 56

FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington nearly erased an 18-point second half deficit, but ran out of time as Castleton University jousted the Beavers 62-56 in NAC men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon.

Facing an 18-point deficit with 12:33 to go in the game, the Beavers (2-18) mounted a 23-10 run to close the gap to 51-46 with 3:38 remaining in regulation.

The Spartans (8-13) pushed the lead back to double digits with two timely jump shots, including a three-pointer by Pavin Parrish.

Ryan Camire netted a team-high 17 points for Farmington. Ryan Rice knocked down a pair of shots from beyond the arc on his way to 10 points for the Beavers.

Nick Hilton of Wilton registered nien points and hauled down a game-high 14 rebounds, while Logan Nichols of Minto was efficient at setting his teammates up with nine assists.
