BRIDGTON — The Great Maine Outdoors Weekend Saturday, Feb. 13, features a variety of outdoors activities across Maine. Hikes are being held in Bridgton and Lovell.

Maine Master Naturalist Leigh Hayes will lead an exploration of Pondicherry Park on snowshoe at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13. Those going should meet at the main kiosk at the Dunning Memorial Bridge, Depot Street.

After the hike, those wishing will walk across the street to the Depot Street Tap House where hot cocoa and cookies will be free to trekkers. Snowshoes will be available upon reservation.

The trek is approximately two hours over easy to moderate terrain.

Pondicherry Park features 66 acres of quiet woodlands and 3,200 feet of stream in the heart of downtown Bridgton. The park was created through the partnership of Loon Echo Land Trust, Lakes Environmental Association and the supportive community members of Bridgton.

In 2012 the park was gifted to the town and it remains in easement with Loon Echo Land Trust.

Bring appropriate warm clothing, hiking shoes or boots, water and snacks. The hike will be canceled in the event of heavy snow or inclement weather.

Also in celebration of the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend, the Greater Lovell Land Trust will offer a walk at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13. The theme for the 2.5-hour hike is “The Art of Seeing.”

Animal tracks abound in winter snow and tell something about the mammals who inhabit Lovell. The snowshoe hike will take place at the Wilson Wing Moose Pond Bog Preserve as trekkers search for animal prints and try to gain a better understanding of the mammals that pass through the property.

The Greater Lovell Land Trust walks are free and open to the public. Look for “Land Trust Walk Today” signs posted on Route 5 and leading to the trail head. Though dogs are welcome on some properties, the GLLT asks that a pet not be taken on a GLLT-sponsored walk.

The trail head is at Horseshoe Pond Road at the Kiosk, Lovell. The degree of difficulty for the hike is easy.
